Heatherleys Online: James Lloyd in Conversation with Anna McNay

The Heatherley Guest Lecturer programme continues with the fifth in a series of online in conversation events with artists (Zoom link below). Portrait painter James Lloyd speaks about his work to art writer and journalist Anna McNay.

In conversation with McNay, Lloyd will discuss his career, from his BP Portrait Award win to today, considering his different approaches to commissioned and non-commissioned portraits, as well as to some of the small heads he paints ‘for himself’. During the conversation, Lloyd will elucidate his process and share stories of some of his more challenging commissions.

About James Lloyd

James Lloyd graduated in the 90s from the Slade School of Fine Art with a Higher Diploma, following a BA in Fine Art from Coventry, and a Diploma from Blackpool College of Art and Design. He teaches at the Royal Drawing School and has won numerous awards, including the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Award, Paul Smith Scholarship, Winsor & Newton Young Artists’ Award, Carrol Foundation Young Artist of the Year Award, first prize in the BP Portrait Award, and the Ondaatje Prize for Portraiture.

Lloyd has undertaken commissions for many private clients and public institutions, including Newcastle University, the Bank of England, Queen’s College, Lords Cricket Ground, the House of Lords, the Royal Collection and the National Portrait Gallery.

Lloyd is represented in the UK by Browse & Darby and in Germany by Hübner & Hübner.

Anna McNay is a freelance art writer and editor. She contributes regularly to Art Quarterly (Art Fund’s magazine, where she was previously Assistant Editor), Studio International, Photomonitor, Elephant magazine, Norwegian Arts, and The Flux Review, and has been widely published in a variety of other print and online art and photography journals and newspapers. She has written numerous catalogue essays, edited a number of books, and regularly hosts panel and in conversation events at galleries around London.
