Portrait Painting All Levels
This twelve week course is suitable for both beginners as well as experienced students.
The course will provide you with an understanding of the methods, materials and concepts required to create a portrait in oils. Basic anatomy, colour mixing, paint application and ways of looking will all be discussed. Four week poses will allow you to develop a sustained engagement with your work and will give you the opportunity to complete three painted portraits during the term.

Materials List
Please bring these materials with you when you start the course:
Oil Paints
Heatherleys sells an excellent range of mid-priced good quality oil paint suitable for beginners. Those more experienced are recommended to bring “artists quality” oils.
Colours
- Titanium white
- Yellow ochre
- Lemon yellow
- Cadmium yellow pale
- Light red or venetian red
- Cadmium red
- Alizarin crimson
- Ultramarine blue
- Raw umber
- Ivory black
Brushes
We recommend two kinds of brushes for oil painting: nylon /synthetic and hog bristle in sizes 2, 5, 7.
- Long flats or long filberts are recommended.
- A pointed brush for detail
- Long handles are preferable
Palette
Wooden or “tear off” paper palette.
Thinners
Low odour thinners.
Please do NOT use turpentine or white spirits in the school as some people can be made very unwell by the fumes.
Also required:
- Double Dippers – used to hold thinners.
- Palette knife, trowel shape is best (Winsor & Newton No 22)
- Canvas or canvas board (can be bought at Heatherleys)
