Observational Painting – All Levels
Regardless of your level of experience, this comprehensive oil painting course will increase your confidence with the medium.
You will work from a range of subject matter, including still life and the clothed model. Topics will include tone, saturation, colour mixing and paint application techniques.
Working from direct observation is an explorative and exciting experience as we look closely at the world around us.

Materials List
Please bring these materials with you when you start the course:
Oil paints (artist’s range) 38ml tubes
- Titanium white
- Cadmium yellow
- Alizarin crimson
- French Ultramarine blue
Low odour thinners (can be purchased at Heatherley’s)
Please only bring low odour thinners with you or buy them from us. For health & safety reasons we do not allow the use of white spirit or turpentine at Heatherley’s.
- A range of brushes between size 1 and 8 (beginners might want to start with hog bristle)
- Large tear-off palette
- Double dippers or two empty jam jars
- Palette knife
- Kitchen roll / old rags
- Apron
- Permanent marker
