Contemporary Painting – Advanced
A contemporary painting course to help you develop and nurture your independent studio practice.
Explore how to generate ideas and how secondary source materials such as drawing and photography can facilitate this.
Regular demonstrations and discussions will focus on drawing towards painting, keeping a sketchbook, colour theory and experimentation and how the selection and use of materials can influence your work.

Materials List
Brushes (suggested list that can be augmented to suit)
- No.3 round hog
- No.5 filbert or flat hog
- No.2 round sable or synthetic
- Wooden palette approx 25 x 35cm (or disposable palette available from shop)
- Straight bladed palette knife
- Dipper
- Odourless thinners (turpentine and white spirit not permitted in school)
- Jam jar
Oil Paints
Needed on first day:
- Titanium White
- Yellow Ochre
- Venetian red
- Ivory black
- Cadmium Yellow lemon
- Cadmium Red
- Alizarin Crimson
- French Ultramarine
- Cerulean blue
(All preferably artist’s quality)
Optional drawing Materials
- Artists Sketchbook (A4)
- Small hardback sketchbook (A6)
- Drawing pencils (selection)
- Putty / hard erasers
- Masking Tape
General for Painting
- A few small cheap canvas boards 10×8 or 10×12 inches (Available from Heatherley’s shop)
- Stanley knife
