Thursdays

An advanced oil painting course to develop your personal painterly language. Increase your understanding of the use of colour and the abstract values that underpin composition.

You’ll have the opportunity to work with a variety of subject matter, including still life and a portrait model.

Focusing on direct observation and the interesting questions this practice raises, we’ll consider the formal issues of drawing and colour.

For those with some practical experience of drawing and oil painting. Not suitable for beginners.

Course Material

Please bring these materials with you when you start the course:

Oil paints (artist’s range) 38ml tubes

  • Titanium white
  • Lemon yellow
  • Cadmium yellow
  • Cadmium red
  • Alizarin crimson
  • Ultramarine blue
  • Prussian/cerulean blue

Other

  • Low odour solvent (eg sansodor or shelsol)
  • Palette
  • Palette knife
  • Brushes (to be discussed in class)
  • A couple of jars with lids
  • Rags or paper towels
  • Apron or other protective clothing

Please only bring low odour thinners with you or buy them from the Heatherleys shop. For health & safety reasons we do not allow the use of white spirit or turpentine.
