We often remember the men who passed through an institution’s doors. With this exhibition we’re honouring the women who’ve made significant contributions to Heatherleys.
Archival material and artwork will be on display from some of the influential women Principals, course directors, chairwomen and alumnae from the school’s establishment in 1845 to the present day.

This is an opportunity to get to know notable alumnae such as Lady Butler and Kate Greenaway. Meet the formidable women behind the male Principals, influential in the history of art education in their own right, several of whom were actively involved in women’s rights and suffrage at home and abroad.
Founder of the The Thomas Heatherley Educational Trust
Learn about Helen Wilson, the founder of the charity ‘The Thomas Heatherley Educational Trust’ that still governs the school to this day. View work from inspirational artists and educators Susan Engledow and Principal Veronica Ricks who established the backbone of the school, Heatherleys’ Portrait Diploma, Sculpture Diploma and Painting & Printmaking Diploma.

In this exhibition there are women for whom there are no photographs or artworks. However, we feel it is important that they are included and remembered. One of these women is alumna Kate Heatherley, a champion of Women’s Suffrage, fierce advocate of birth control and the estranged wife of Heatherleys Principal Thomas Heatherley.
