Head of Printmaking, Hilary Daltry, has curated 2 exhibitions of work at Brompton Cemetery this month – ‘The Scientist and the Firebrand’ and ‘Inspired by Brompton’.
She says ” ‘Inspired by Brompton’ was an exhibition by Heatherleys Printmaking students who have drawn inspiration from Brompton Cemetery. It is the fourth year that The Friends of Brompton Cemetery have invited us to exhibit in The Chapel on their annual Open Day, an event that can attract a 1000 visitors. This year visitors were impressed by the beautifully restored Chapel, new cafe and meeting place. Many of the etchings in the exhibition feature Emmeline Pankhurst (who is buried at Brompton) and are a response to this centenary year of women getting the vote. Ablah Asfar’s etchings include ‘Ressurection’ (butterflies) and a colour etching of ‘The Goths’ gathering beside the colonnades – dressed all in black, regulars on Open Day. ‘Birds in Tree’ a collagraph print by Monica Oldano celebrates nature. (Brompton is the only garden cemetery managed by The Royal Parks.)
Also on display was ‘The Scientist and the Firebrand’, a collaborative exhibition between St.Marylebone and Heatherleys students. The Chapel featured ‘Votes for Women’, work commemorating 100 years since women’s partial suffrage. We also enjoyed a performance of the singing protesters in the Chapel!”
