Minna Stevens is an artist who graduated from the BA course in Fine Art at Goldsmiths and went on to study design history at the Royal College of Art and the V&A Museum but returned to her true passion for painting. Her sensitivity to colour and structure rebuilds a figure or a landscape in such a way that it both explodes and resolves her subjects. The visual experience is held in the balance, between coherence and disintegration. Her paintings open out and offer breathing space.
Ostensibly, her subjects are familiar, often children and animals, and her treatment seems relaxed and casual, yet there is an energy and urgency that gives vitality to fleeting moments. Her portraits capture her sitters in time while making us aware of the mechanics of perception and of the act of painting itself.
