Learning to Paint in Oils
This oil painting introduction course is for both the beginner and for those who have limited experience of painting in oils. We will provide you with a comprehensive introduction to the materials and techniques of oil painting, giving you a clear understanding of colour, tone and composition.

Course Materials
Please bring these materials with you:
Jam jar for solvent
Dippers (double metal holder for mediums)
Palette knife (Winson & Newton No 22)
Palette – ‘Tear off’ palette or a wooden round or rectangle one (must be flat)
Odourless solvent like W&N Sansodor (for dilution & cleaning brushes)
Kitchen towel / rags
Hog brushes in a range of sizes (a set can be useful – round or flat, make sure to get a pointy size ‘1’ for drawing)
Smaller synthetic brushes – can be useful
Oils (titanium white, lemon yellow, cadmium yellow, cadmium red, alizarin crimson, cerulean blue, ultramarine blue). Small tubes are fine, Winsor & Newton ‘Winton’ range are good & relatively affordable
canvas / oil paper – about A4 / A3
